Last weekend we took the dogs on a hiking trip to the French Ardennes. We stayed in one of the Levaly houses (Levaly 2) in a very small village called Thilay. The view from the house and garden were simply stunning, the house itself was very cosy and equiped with all the necessary things for both humans as well as dogs and the region is ideal to go hiking.
We arrived on Friday evening and first got all the explanations about the house and house rules. After that, we checked out the neighbourhood and unpacked all our stuff. By the time we finished all that, it was getting dark, so we had dinner and watched some tv.
On Saturday morning we first went to the local bakery to buy some French baguettes for breakfast and to prepare & pack for a picknick later that day. During breakfast we checked our hiking route for that day on the map: we were planning to do a serious hike all the way up to Roc la tour (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roc_la_Tour or http://www.hiking.be/?78). We had been training these past few weeks to do long walks with the dogs and it proved to come in quite handy since the climb to the Roc de la Tour turned out to be quite steep at certain points. Nonetheless we reached the top and were rewarded with a beautiful view – an ideal place to have a picknick! The weather wasn’t completely in our favour, so on our way up we were surprised by a rain shower and on our way down even had to walk through a hailstorm. We safely made it all the way back down though, but since the hailstorm somewhat limited our view, we missed a road turn and had to walk about 6 kms more than we had planned. When we got back to the house, the sky was clearing up, so we let the dogs swim in the Semois river behind the house to get rid of all the mud. After taking a shower and preparing dinner, we enjoyed a quiet evening on the couch with the tv on and the dogs sleeping at our feet.
